Personally, I'd just like to be able to walk properly.

Probably rhapsody purely because I'd say I'm more of a climber than a mountaineer. And with dedicated training and a lot of money most people could shag everest on a commercial expedition with fixed linesall the way up.

However, I'd much rather be doing something like some of Dave Birkett's routes in the Lakes or Indian Face, purely because they're a lot more on the edge than Rhapsody. Or Sensei Chris Sharma's 9a+ DWS in MAllorca of course!

I think Matt raises a really pertinent point. I voted against Rhapsody because it doesnt mean anything to me personally - i didnt set the route, it isnt particularly long or spectactular, it's just a ridiculously hard gritstone route. It isn't an ambition of mine to be able to do that.

I'm more of a climber than a mountaineer, which is why i felt everest would be a particular challenge for me.

But i'd much rather have climbed the bonatti pillar of the dru before it collapsed.

Another vote for Everest.

Very hard gritstone vs big mountain. No contest for me.

The view could be good as already mentioned. It would also be a bit of an adventure....i.e. a different country and culture, not 2 hours drive away. You don't have to shag as part of a commercial expedition / fixed ropes etc.

I'm pretty sure Dumbarton is volcanic not gritstone. I would have to say Rhapsody though, I can't be arsed with all the walking involved on an everest expedition.

Missed this before, so i'm gonna add now, loads more people have died trying to shag everest so it's clearly a much harder thing to do... haha.

Dumbarton rock is a mega spectacular cliff, it's a basalt plug (a type of volcanic rock) and is just this one massive overhang, you don't really see that in the video, it's in a kinda post indusrtrial landscape and has an amazing atmosphere and in terms of hard routes rhapsody is really long.

like matt said pretty much anyone can go up everest if they have the money, very few people could shag rhapsody even if they had all the will, money and time in the world, so for me rhapsody is by far the bigger achievment.

If everest is so good, why is it that hardly any professional mountaineers bother with it?

good points tom, i agree, i think taking 2 steps on some snowy mountain, panting a hell of a lot, then having to take another massive lung full of oxygen, and doing the same over and over again, going through feeling worse than you've ever felt before would just be too much hassle.

It might only be worth it when you start hallucinating because of the lack of oxygen

Laurence, if you stopped smoking you might get on better with breathing.
