For those who have chosen to talk to me recently, they are aware that I am considering taking up skiing/boarding. I even have a holiday planned with friends to La Plagne on the 28th Jan for a week!

I have also budgeted for a possible 1 day course at Milton Keynes to get to grips with this slippery mode of transport. I'm well aware that I won't be any good, and I fully expect to spend most of my holiday time on nursery slopes/falling over and, with a birthday party involved: drunk!

Now to the big debate: Some say ski, some say board. An an equal amount of my friends are standing each side of fence!

Looking to the future, and if I'm making this kind of financial investment, I want to get alright at this snowy sport thats for sure! - Ski touring seemed to hold out over boarding as such an off-piste adventure was 'not possible'. However! I have now come across split-boarding! Where you 'ski-tour' on a split board, then fit it together to board down the mountain!

So! Which one should I learn to do at Milton Keynes? - In an ideal world, I'd want to learn both, but I cant. :/

Learn to ski. I learned to ski in MK a decade ago and its easy enough to get the hang of initially. If you do get a good start then a week of skiing should be enough to see you confident on more than learner slopes...

Also split boarding sounds, and is ridiculous :? .

James, what do the Ski touring guides use? Skis! Must be a winner.

Plus, you can always learn to snowboard once you can ski (if you really want to spend most of your time on your arse!)

Haha. But skiing fucks up your knees! Really want to do both. Why can't I get a pay raise early!

Maybe your right. Maybe Splitboarding is just too new. Lol.

skiing is a lot more useful, but snow boarding is way cooler and makes you look like a boss!

I don't think splitboards are that new really, I think they've been round for a decade or so, the problem is they're a massive hassle, whereas on touring ski's you just put your skins on, release your heel and go, on split boards you have to split the board, swivel your binding, release your heel, then put skins on.

Also because boards are short the two "skis" you get from a split board are really short, which is a major problem in deep snow, i.e. it makes going uphill really hard/impossible, and deep snow is what you aim for!

My right knee is beyond screwed, I don't have any issues with it when skiing. Unless your doing ridiculous 50+ft transitions / drops (or moguls) you probably won't notice it too much!

Being a seasoned skier and snowboarder would recommend, James, you learn to ski first. a) easier to learn and faster pick up b) overall less damage to body at the end of a week c) faster down hill d) more versatile for other winter sports (cross country, ski touring etc) e) skill for life (you dont see many 50+ on snowboards).

If you need advice on what to take, kit etc or even want to borrow stuff let me know! p.s. Please wear a helmet!

Cool Splitboarding video! :D That its bloody impressive & looks awesome! :)

Skis down a powdery mountain vs Boarding down a mountain. Boarding looks way cooler. :)

Still, i think I've made the smarter choice to learn to Ski though. :/ Since everybody else seems to do it, peer pressure won this round. Lol

But, I have 10 days in Easter break off... If im not going to font, maybe I'll try boarding then. ;)
