tell him to read Maria Coffey's book 'where the mountain casts its shadow' she was the girlfriend of Joe Tasker when he died and its all about questioning the motives of people who risk their lives mountaineering when they risk leaving loved ones behind. really interesting reading and she's interviewed loads of famous mountaineers. May be really useful?

he should also read Feeding the Rat by al Alvarez. its a great little biography about Mo Anthoine and there's a lot about motivation and abition for climbing, mountaineering and adventure, hense the name!
