If anyone's looking for boots still there's a size 45 pair on ukclimbing going for £40! they're the same boots as mine and they look in better condition (apart from a hole in the lining at the heel which has been repaired). they do look like a good buy!

Argh you tease me, I tried on a pair of Cumbres in size 44 and they fit me like a glove if only these were one size smaller.

It isn't always a bad idea to go a size up, you could always wear thicker socks...

If anybody's after a good soft shell (windproof, water resistant & abrasion resistant) check out the Mountain Hardware Alchemy Jacket. Its amazing!

I've had mine for over 2 1/2 years now and its still brilliant. I wore it to Scotland last year, the Alps this summer and will most definitely be taking it with me this year. Compared to the other softhells on the market, this is the only one (in my opinion) which seemed to have tougher outer layer.

So if anybody's unsure on a softshell, I know this one will do the job. Prices should also have come down now as its an "old" model. lol

P.S.
If anybody wants to borrow a North Face Windstopper softshell (fleecy outer) I have one in Medium. Its good, not as water resistant as my Alchemy, but it does the job (keeps the wind out).
First come 1st served. lol. I'll be in the Uni on Monday 14th if anyone wants to try it out for size?

I will chip in with my experience a bit - I have a Montura softshell jacket for a while already and I have to say it is also one of the very resistant ones. I remember jamming my arms couple of times while wearing it and no marks.

Also, when looking for softshells have a look if it has reinforced elbows or shoulders, that further improves its durability.

Good reminder.

Just to add, a hardshell waterproof is essential. I have never worn my softshell in Scotland (apart from maybe in the bus or hut) so a softshell is definitely not essential......a useful luxury if you have one.

Serious question, anyone fancy heading up Scotland tonight/tomorrow and climbing this weekend?
