Ski Club Launch Antarctic Challenge for Young People

The Ski Club of Great Britain are offering two young people between the age of 18 and 28 the chance to be part of a trip of a lifetime on an Antarctic expedition with Polar adventurer and Ski Club President Robert Swan – the first man to walk to both the north and south poles.

The 2010 Inspire Antarctic Expedition, taking place in March 2010 will involve an international team taking a journey through the Antarctic Peninsula - one of the most remote, inhospitable environments on earth. Harsh and inaccessible, covered by over 5 million square miles of solid ice, it is the world’s highest, driest, coldest and windswept continent.

To be in with a chance of being part of the March 2010 Inspire Antarctic Expedition, candidates have to complete a proposal* outlining their ambitions to be part of the expedition as well as raising £10,000 to fund their place on the expedition. To help the chosen candidates on their fundraising mission, the Ski Club’s green ‘Respect the Mountain’ campaign will give both winners £1,000. The successful candidates will also be asked to share their experiences with the Ski Club and put forward any ideas to shape the Respect the Mountain campaign on their return.

“We are proud to be able to offer two people the chance to be part of something that is a once in a lifetime opportunity,” said Caroline Stuart Taylor, Chief Executive of the Ski Club. “They have a challenge on their hands to raise the funds for the expedition, but the type of people that have the desire to go on this trip will be more than capable of raising enough money. We are happy we can help them out with a donation from the Respect the Mountain fund as we believe the campaign is about educating people about green issues as well as raising awareness.”

The expedition is part of Robert Swan’s 2041 campaign, and with a group of on-board experts, including Swan himself, team members will gain firsthand knowledge of the continent as well as working on leadership and teamwork skills. The group which will include environmentalists, entrepreneurs, teachers and young people, will also be in a unique position to share their experiences and knowledge gained with their colleagues, friends and families back home.

The 2041 campaign was founded by Robert Swan, OBE. Swan has dedicated his life to the preservation of Antarctica by engaging with industry and young people on sustainability to take action in order to combat the effects of climate change. In 2041 the Protocol on Environmental Protection to the Antarctic Treaty could potentially be modified or amended. 2041’s aim is to work towards the continuing protection of the Antarctic Treaty so that the last great wilderness on earth is never exploited.

More details about the expedition and how to apply can be found on the Ski Club of Great Britain website – skiclub.co.uk

Notes to editors:

The mission

*Two young people will be chosen to be part of the March 2010 Inspire Antarctic Expedition. To become one of those two people they have to send a proposal to the Ski Club which is no longer than 2 sides of A4 and answers the following questions:

1. Show evidence of what you have done to take action against climate change.

2. Why should you go on the IAE expedition in March 2010

3. What could you bring to the expedition team

4. How could you help Robert Swan and the 2041 team in the mission to protect the Antarctic Treaty?

5. How will you raise the £9,000 required to fund the expedition?

6. In one sentence tell us why we should choose you to be on the expedition team?

For more info let me know and i'll send you the full email.
