Turns out I have probably fractured the Scaphoid bone in my wrist alongside the sprain, hence why its taking so long to heal... :pale:

Going to GP but to be honest i'm gonna value my contemporary stoat's advice a lot more. What do you guys think about climbing on it? Anyone ever broken a Scaphoid before?

if you have actually fractured your scaphoid, which doesn't show up in a conventional wrist xray you'd be pretty stupid to shag on it.

oh nose tom! sometimes it doesn't show up on xrays. But of you are feeling especially tender at the very base of your thumb then tis likely. Most of the people i've seen have had to go into a wrist splint type thing to give it a good chance of healing, it takes especially long as it hasn't got lots of blood going to it. Let us geeks know how it goes! Hope it starts to get better soon!!!

I fractured my scaphoid in 2nd year so you're not the first Stoat to do it Tom.

If you have fractured it, you will have a forearm cast as both the thumb and wrist joints need to be immobilised. Probably for about 3 months.

If you do need a cast, then climbing might be difficult anyway and you should avoid it (I went once or twice for a really gentle wall session whilst I had the cast on just to avoid going crazy). The scaphoid generally has a very poor blood supply and may not heal naturally even if you do imobilise it, in which case you may need a bone graft operation to help the healing process. Talk to Duggan about that, cos I think his sister needed to have one several years ago.

Of course, you don't know whether you have a fracture yet or not, so if you miss a quality day for just a wrist sprain, you may feel pretty gutted. Then again, sprains should be rested aswell until they clear up, so its up to you to take the risk or not.

Whatever happens, get the X-rays done ASAP so you know what's going to happen.

Take it from me though that Alek is right: climbing on fractures is a bad idea.

Definitely shag on it! Macleod managed the walk of life with THREE broken Scaphoids. Now thats a real man.

If you were to shag a first ascent whilst it was broken you could name it: Broken Scaphoid. Cool route name.
