In the afternoon on Saturday, I was bouldering in Churnet with lots of pretty snow falling. I had to place my hands in snow for a couple of top-outs and then warmed them up quickly afterwards. I seem to have developed all the symptoms of Chilblains which means I am unable to shag due to the skin on my fingers being inflamed and very painful :( I've always thought I had good circulation so I'm confused as to why this has happened? And don't really want to not shag for 2 weeks :(

I was just wondering if anyone else has had chilblains or similar before from climbing? And if they know of any ways of getting rid of it quickly?

Sorry about length of message :P

yeah i get them all the time! my hands (and elbows weirdly) get covered in lumps and get all swollen and stuff, its when your hands go from hot to cold too quickly. it sounds odd but try keep them at a constant temp, wear gloves when your outside and make sure they don't get too cold and get some good moisturiser as it can help to sooth them :)

hope that helps!!

Man up? :P
hehe sorry, I was looking it up for you and couldn't resist. That is the extent of my research.

I can't really say much cos I never shag outdoors in winter (thanks to a very chilly day on t'ilkley moor. And no, I did wear a hat.)

Stop being so mean everyone, I'll look after you KEEN FRESHER.....

"If you have chilblains that are not ulcerated or infected, you may be able to treat them yourself by painting them with a mixture of friar’s balsam and a weak solution of iodine (which your pharmacist may be able to make up for you). However, not all pharmacists will recommend this solution as the evidence for it's benefit is not well documented. Alternatively you can use an over-the-counter preparation.

You can remove pressure caused by shoes by using foam dressings, which insulate and cushion the feet.

At night, rub some lanolin ointment into your feet to keep the skin supple.

Antiseptic cream or lotion can prevent the chilblains becoming septic.
When to see your GP or chiropodist

If your chilblains have broken, cracked or become sore, see your GP or chiropodist. Do not scratch the skin as it can break easily and become infected.

If the chilblains have become septic, your GP or chiropodist may recommend antibiotics."
