As in ropes, not shots.

For my birthday, I'm thinking of buying myself a rope, and I was very keen on the idea of getting doubles so that I can easily do routes with traverses and absail off multipitch sport climbs, which I hope to do. Then I remembered that they wouldn't be too good for leading indoors, or single pitch sport routes.

What I would like to know is:
Why exactly can't you lead on one double?
When while you're leading on doubles, you will normally fall onto one rope.
Also, if it is because of abarasion to the sheaf, because they will be my own ropes, would it work if I kept track of which rope I used last and alternated leading on them indoors and on single pitch sport routes so that each recieved the same amount of abrasion?

Easy option is to have a pair of doubles. And then a short 30 metre single rope for the wall.

I tend to use single ropes for most things these days, its fine as long as you remember to extend your runners correctly.

You can use em for single pitch sport just clip both into the draw or into alternate draws. Doubles definitely more versatile, the reason you can't shag on one is not breaking strength from a fall but because they're thinner so can be cut more easily.

you've got to think what to you want your rope for exactly, then pick what type of rope to get. ie diff ropes (not just single or double but size, length n coatings) are for diff things and it gets messy to pick n mix (dangerous or costly for example). obv there are compromises that can be made within rope types

If I were to buy a rope, I would get a single, and extendable runners, as I find doubles a big faff, and seem to still get rope drag when I use them!

(obviously I do not have much expertise on this issue, but as I think you and me are quite similar on our climbing, I thought I'd pass on my view Katie!!)

katie, i got a 60m single. prehaps a thinner lighter one for you, but not use it indoors - either use a club one or as paul said get another 30m v. durable, thick one for inside
