In reality, I missed out on the prospect of doing a couple of routes in the Alps last year with the Conville people after the course as i didn't have a bivi bag. :/
Rather than pay the extortionate hut fees, most seemed to bivi outside, get up early and miss the traffic up whatever route they were doing and come back down to pick up their bivi stuff after the summit.

Thats certainly true, although is does mean you have to carry tent (or just a bag if you have a good sleeping bag), sleepbag, matt and food (if you know its not going to rain and have a good sleepbag you could always lose the tent, not really advised for your first time though)

Normally, you can go into the hut in the evening and buy an evening meal (they can be pricey), it not great food (well not for a veggy) but it saves you carring food.

For the mornings, as its usually around 3am and I wouldn't really suggest bringing actual breackfast , some dry bread and jam is what you will get in the hut and this is a good breakfast at that time.
Or just bring chocolate and some dense cake, good level of sugar and carbohyrate, plus chocolate is good if you get altitude sickness as you just need to suck it to get the sugar and not actually eat (which if you get bad alitude you really dont feel like eating).

In terms of drink, lemon or mint tea is good, unless you feel like carrying milk up and hopeing it doesnt go off in your warm rucksack during the day). everyoen probably knows but tea in the huts is black tea, same with the coffee, so if you hate these go for the hot chocolate option.

Ive brough up a pot of instant pasta stuff and then used the carton it came in as a cup for my warm drink, it wasn't exactly pleasent, (tomato and herb flavoured mint tea), so for the extra weight i would probably bring another cup for a warm drink),

If you are going to stay in the huts BOOK IN ADVANCE if it is a busy hut. And listen to what time they say you have to be there by, as they will give others your place if you are late. Also food is served at a block time and you get a set of food for a table, so if you are late you might not get that much food.
Realistically unless you are really slow (which suggest maybe you should re-think the next day), or leave way too late, you should get to the hut in time.

I've never taken a tent, just a bivi bag and it's always been fine, just sleep with all your clothes on! (one time i was naked and that was COLD!) Although some people do take tents. if you're sneaky there are lots of places you can sleep in like ski lift buildings etc.

The club actually has at least 2 bivy bags which are prefect for the alps, they're "breathable" and everything... (i actually have the same one and haven't been overly impressed with the breathability, I've woken up a few times to find a layer of ice on the inside of it from condensation) they also very rarely get used so you guys should be able to grab them for the alps, everyone usually thinks they're group shelters...
