Please find below the opportunity to visit the highest mountain in the world courtesy of Childreach. The catch? You won't be climbing it, just walking around the bottom. Pretty daft if you ask me, espicially considering the title, but hey, its for charity:shag EVEREST IN 2010 FOR CHARITY:
MEETING: TUESDAY 24TH NOVEMBER
WHERE: FRANKLAND 305 (PSYCHOLOGY BUILDING)
TIME: 3-4 PM
Mount Everest is the roof of the world. Standing at 29,029ft it is the highest point on the planet and is well known to command some of the most amazing views possible to witness with the human eye. However you don't have to go to the top to appreciate the awesome majesty imposed by this fantastic mountain.
Expedition Everest is a two week hike through some of the Himalayas most impressive valleys and ranges to the base camp of the world's largest mountain.
Despite the surroundings, participants do NOT have to be well-seasoned mountaineers to take part; all you need is a sense of adventure! This is a expedition with a difference because in addition to trekking in the remote parts of Nepal, participants will get chance to offset their carbon emissions and the deforestation in the Sola Khumbu, spend time with Himalayan Buddhist monks and visit some of Childreach International's projects.
Itinerary:
The basic itinerary for Expedition Everest is outlined below...
Day
1- Depart London Heathrow
2- Land in Kathmandu, crash out at the hotel and do some sightseeing
3- Pre-trek briefing, stock up on kit and a little more settling in
4- Take a twin propeller plane from Kathmandu to the heart of Himalayas
5- Start walking from the trek low-point, Phakding to Namche Bazaar
6- Spend the day acclimatising in the Sherpa capital, Namche Bazaar
7- Trek to the Buddhist retreat, Tengboche
8- Continue to Dingboche and grab the first up-close views of the Everest ridge
9- Acclimatise in Dingboche by exploring the surrounding areas
10- Push on to the foot of the Khumbu glacier, Lobuche
11- Traverse across the Khumbu glacier to the foot of Everest, Gorak Shep
12- An early morning summit of Kala Patthar for the best views possible of Everest with a lazy afternoon spent exploring Everest Base Camp and the glacier!
13- Head back down to the lush, drystoned walled valley of Pheriche
14- Further push down to Namche Bazaar
15- From Namche, a quick jaunt down to the airstrip at Lukla
16- Early morning flights back to Kathmandu for some celebrating!
17-23- Days to explore Kathmandu
24- Fly home!
When Is It?
The Birmingham group will be departing September 5th-26th 2010
If you can’t make this date and are still interested there are plenty of other universities going out there over the summer that you can join.
Sponsorship
The minimum sponsorship to take in Expedition Everest is only £2,200*.
Not only will you get to take part in the trip of a lifetime but you'll also make a huge difference to hundreds of children's lives!
*Please be aware that some of your sponsorship money will be spent on your expenses. There is also a non-refundable initial deposit of £220 required.
What Childreach does for you?
All of your flights, transfers, accommodation, food and trekking costs (i.e. national park fees, guides,
meals etc) will all be paid for you.
