Definately something to be aware of! I will be leaving the rubber bands on mine though, but i will be checking them before i use them!

Interestingly the last petzl catalogue talked about this so it can't be the first time its happend, it's also got a couple of other similar things in there that's worth a read on gear and rope/gear techniques.

Scary stuff!
