Yea for some reason the Wayfarers are using it as a social, guess they struggle for social ideas, unlike ourselves.

But seriously, it's because we try and get out members into more outdoor activities than just hiking around England.

We try and promote caving, mountain biking, sailing, kayaking, rock climbing/bouldering, slacklining and other fun activities to our members. Our members are likely international novices who have only done DofE or maybe their first experience of the outdoors is through the Wayfarers.

Our main priority and focus will always be walking. However, if we're in the Dales then we may go caving, if we're in Pembrokeshire we set up some top-ropes. If we're in Scotland we may go sailing or mountain biking. Nothing hard, just introductory.

This is why we make socials to attend Banff Mountain Film Festival, talks at the town hall and recently the Reel Rock 8 tour. The speakers/films generate so much passion and inspiration amongst the audience that our members then may seek out further activities in that area.

tl;dr: It's because we want to introduce our members to something outside their comfort zone.

p.s. Very few of our members actually want to see/pay to see Leo Houlding tonight.

Is it true you guys aren't allowed ice axes in case you hurt yourselves with them?
