Munrow Sports Centre Lecture Theatre at 7:30pm, Thursday 21st February

It's that time again - the time where this years committee passes on the responsibility, the rewards, the access to the committee forum...

Any member of the club can stand for any position on the committee and any member of the club can vote - so even if you don't want to be on the committee next year come along to make sure that you have your say on who runs the club next year and how they run it.

There is an election for each position, the candidates are nominated or put themselves forward and then each are given a chance to say why they should be elected, why they want to do it... After that there's a chance for questions to be asked following which there's an anonymous vote. It's quite formal to make sure it's completely democratic but really isnt as intimidating as it sounds.

What are the positions on the committee?? Well read on...

President
(Executive Position)

The president has overall responsibility for the club, he or she chairs committee meetings, supports the rest of the committee and generally oversees everything that goes on.
Talk to: James

Vice-President
(Executive Position)

Works closely with the president in the role of generally looking after everything and acts as deputy to the president should he or she not be available for any reason. The VP is also responsible for running Pembroke, the clubs health&safety and any training courses we run.
Talk to: Alek

Treasurer
Executive Position

Responsible for keeping track of the UBMC money – a very important role. The guild provides treasurer training so you don’t necessarily have to know the ins and outs straight away, but a methodical approach and good attention to detail help.
Talk to: Tommy B

Secretary
(Executive Position)

Takes minutes at committee and general meetings, deputises if both the president and vice-president aren’t available, and responsible for recording details of all members for insurance.
Talk to: Jules

Social Secs (2 positions)
Social secs organise our fortnightly socials which can be (more or less) anything they choose, although a good balance between alcoholic and more chilled out socials is always a good way to go. They are also responsible for running Stanage and the Annual Dinner.
Talk to: Laurence, Rosie or Alek

Gear Secs (2 positions)
Responsible for buying, maintaining and retiring all the club gear as well as ensuring gear is available for trips and Wednesday afternoons.
Talk to: Tom Green, Neil or James

Mountain Sec
Runs the Scotland trip (a bigger task than it sounds) and organises any other winter climbing related events that they want to bring in.
Talk to: Starley

Indoor Sec
Responsible for running our competitions, both the annual SCIUBL and BUSA and the inter university all club ones, also organises the Munrow sessions in the first term and any trips to other indoor walls around the country.
Talk to: Katie

Caving Sec
Exactly what it says on the tin – responsible for all things cavey, from trips to training.
Talk to: Rich

If you want to know more about the elections, the committee or a particular position talk to me or someone who's been in the role you're thinking about. I would encourage everyone to think about being on the committee - it is hard work at times but is very rewarding, often fun and at the very least looks good on your CV.

Being on the committee is a good experience as you can develop all sorts of skills such as organising things, interacting with people and being in charge. The committee is there to support each other, so if you're having trouble with something, people always step in to help. It's good to feel really involved in something you're really passionate about - ie being responsible for opening up climbing for more people.

If you'd like any tips on speeches or answering questions you can consult us too. I ended up giving quite a few speeches last year and got through it ok! Indoor Sec is a good position, ask me anything you want about it and you can ask Krystina also if you'd like a second opinion as she was the indoor sec before me.

Agreed. The committee experience is well worth it, from so many points of view. Not least because it gives you the chance to

a) continue the good work the previous committee did and expand on it, and

b) help to sort out all those things which really pissed you off last year
(these are not mutually exclusive!).

Also looks great on your CV, for anyone hoping to get a job after uni.

If in any doubt what the committee means to the club and vice versa, look at all the great trips and socials that have happened this year and the responses people have given. Oh and the annual dinner.

Great work this year guys, may it continue with next year's crop!

I'll agree to everything that has been said, and whether you run for any position or not, its worth going along to listen to what people have to say and to cast your vote/show your support!

Everyone should at least consider running for a position, I think its important to give what you can back to the club and enjoy climbing at the same time. And honestly if you're thinking about it just talk to us about it, i know one or two people have asked me what its like, and we're more than happy to talk to you about it

And there is also the curry afterwards if you're not already convinced :P

It is a great experience to be on the committee, and help run the club!

Like the others have said above, you can give something back to the club that has given you the brilliant climbing skills and fanastic social life you have had since you joined! You get to bring your own ideas into the way the club is run, and help encourage new people into climbing, and put your name in the UBMC history books (which go back a very long way!).

Feel free to chat to any of us, or give us a call. It really is open to anyone who is enjoys being in this club, and with so many different types of positions, there is something to interest everyone!

And definately come along anyway, even if you dont want to run - its another classic UBMC social!

Dont forget this is tomorrow - 7:30 in the lecture theatre in munrow, just behind the bar. Turn up to stand, or to vote for the people you want to be on committee or just to see who's going to be running the club next year!

I'm going to be a tiny bit late as I have a French writing test this evening! Yay. But will be there at about 5 past 8. If the election for Mountain Sec has already happened by then I'll sulk. But I trust in the ability of stoats to faff greatly. ;)

It's going to be a highly efficient streamlined AGM with minimal faffing!! But i still doubt we'll hit mountain sec before 8 Luke, hope the test goes well (not that you've ever failed a test)

I failed an interview for shelf-stacking if that counts. I just wasn't good enough for Waitrose.

Well done to the new committee, looks like it'll be an excellent year. Bad luck to those who didnt get the positions they wanted - it really isnt anything personal and there are plenty of ways you can still be involved without being on committee!
