If your Christmas wish list is anything like mine – Climbing up large snowy/icy things, New Year’s Celebrations and of course, Mountain Babes then read on...

It's time to get excited about the :rendeer: :rendeer:
UBMC Scotland Trip!! :rendeer: :rendeer:

During this week-long adventure we travel to the Cairngorms in Scotland. We will be staying at Nethy Station (the perfect base for some mountaineering mayhem!) between 29th of December 2010 - 5th of January 2011. Yes we’ll be there for New Year and we all know that nobody gets as excited about Hogmanay as the Scots so it’ll be an awesome night! (and week for that matter!)

Also, a course is run for the first two days of our stay for those who haven’t done any winter mountaineering before.

This trip is a great opportunity for many people to experience winter mountaineering for their first time. It was on this trip last year that I had an epiphany, it went something like this: Mountaineering is Fúcking Awesome!

Update!

We are meeting at the Munrow Sports Centre at 8:30am prompt.

It is also a tradition that we will be going for a curry the night before! This will be compulsary for everyone that's leaving from Birmingham!!!
:thumright:

Wow, another year as cheap as last year. Did you manage to secure extra funding from the guild for this again?

For those who are interested, this trip is good fun, and even more so if you get to skid a minibus around in a driveway on the snow.

I can highly recommend this week long, legendary UBMC trip. After all I’ve been on it 4 times, each as good as the other! It’s a fantastic chance to experience Scottish winter mountaineering in my favorite part of the Cairngorms.

There’ll be activities and opportunities to suit all tastes of those who enjoy the outdoors. To list a few: ice climbing, mountain walking, lower level walking, mixed routes, gully climbs, glissading, skiing / boarding / cross country…you name it. + a great time socially. We usually go to Granton-on-Spey for Hogmanay for a party with live music and dancing on the streets.

What’s more it’s cheap, really cheap for a week’s trip and 2 day course (thanks to UBMC and the guild for subsidy). Most of the specialist kit you can borrow from the club or friends. Other items you can get affordably from Millet, TK max, 20% off at Costwolds etc.

The winter skills course is excellent, ran by two ML/MIA chaps, its takes you through the basics of wintering for those new to snow: how to use ices axes and crampons, snow hole and shelter digging, walking and climbing techniques etc.

Here are some useful links about all things Scotland trip related:

Mountain Weather Info Service - for a decent forecast and avalanche reports
Nethy Station - accommodation
Avalanche Quiz - tutorial and quiz about avalanche awarness
Cairngorm Mountain - for info about where we go

Ohh and some books:
'Winter Skills - Essential winter walking and climbing techniques' - Cunningham and Fyffe (official book of MIA)
'Scottish Winter Climbs' - Nisbet, Anderson, Richardson (Scottish mountaineering club climbers guide)
