This years UBMC annual general meeting will take place on Wednesday the 12th of March at 18:00 in the learning centre UG07.

This is your chance to vote on who will represent the club as the committee of 2014/15 so please come along make sure your voice is heard!

What's the Deal?

On this date the next committee will take over from the current one and all the positions shown below are up for nomination. Every member gets to vote on an electronic keypad and all votes are kept anonymous. Any member can run for a position, as long as they have someone to nominate and second them so don't feel you can't run for something! Everyone running for a position must prepare a small speech on why they want/why they think they'd be good at the role and likely answer a few questions from the audience.

After all the positions have been filled we'll all go for a curry (location TBC - Selly somewhere...) The AGM does have the potential to run quite late (there's a lot of talking!) so we may not end up eating until 10pm - bring some snacks and a few beers of course!

What do I do if I want to run?

1.Talk to someone on committee, preferably the position(s) you are applying to and they'll be able to talk to you a bit about the role/what it's like to be on committee.

2.Start thinking about what you're going to say in your speech. For the non-exec roles it can just be why you want to do it. If you're applying for president, vp, treasurer or secretary you might want to say a bit more and you'll be expected to field more questions from the audience.

3.Find someone to nominate you. All they need to do is say that they nominate you to run for the position you'd like on the evening on the AGM.

The roles:

President (Executive Position)
The president has overall responsibility for the club; he or she chairs committee meetings, supports the rest of the committee, generally oversees everything that goes on, maintains links with the MAM and attempts to keep everyone happy. More than it sounds.
Talk to: MILF-Hunter (D.an G)

Vice-President (Executive Position)
Works closely with the president in the role of generally looking after everything and steps in as president should he or she not be available for any reason. The VP is also responsible for running the summer trip to Pembroke/Cornwall, the clubs health & safety, training courses, fleeces and more.
Talk to: Heather or MILF-Hunter (D.an G)

Treasurer (Executive Position)
Responsible for keeping track of the UBMC money for both guild and AU accounts – a very important role. The guild provides treasurer training so you don’t necessarily have to know the ins and outs straight away, but a methodical approach and good attention to detail will help.
Talk to: LARD-HUNTER (I.ndy), Helen or Sensei Chris

Secretary (Executive Position)
Takes minutes at committee and general meetings, deputises if both the president and vice president aren’t available. Records membership details and deals with the BMC. Although base requirements of the secretary are relatively small you can achieve as much or as little as you want with this role.
Talk to: Meg or maltloaf (A.dam J)

Social Secs (2 positions)
A fun but busy role. Social secs organise our fortnightly socials which can be (more or less) anything they choose, although a good balance between alcoholic and more chilled out socials is always a good way to go. They are also responsible for running Stanage and the Annual Dinner. This is the most creative position on the committee and the sky is the limit as to what you can achieve.
Talk to: Emma, Lizzie, Heather, Robin

Gear Secs (2 positions)
Responsible for buying, maintaining and retiring the club gear as well as ensuring gear its availability for trips and Wednesday afternoons. Know what's on a rack and love organising? Then this is the position for you. Not to be underestimated.
Talk to: Sam, Jonny, LARD-HUNTER (I.ndy), Will, MILF-Hunter (D.an), Helen

Mountain Sec
Runs the Scotland trip and organises any other winter climbing related events that they want to bring in. In charge of getting a love of all things cold and white into the club.
Talk to: Henry (Hen.ry J)

Indoor Sec
Responsible for running our indoor competitions and taking care of our new and flourishing AU team. The Indoor Sec is our main point of contact with the AU and the UBSport office.
Talk to: Hazel, FISH CHUGGER (P.atrick)

Web Sec (probably most important role in the club #superexecutive)
In charge of maintaining our amazing website and forum. Should be very computer-literate and preferably have some experience with websites/HTML.
Talk to: Starley, KEEN FRESHER (R.oss)

Final Remarks:

If you're interested in running for committee, my advice would be don't be shy and go for it. Although there is some work involved, the benefits you get make it worth it and compliment massively to the 'uni experience'. For anyone interested in getting a job it's something great to have on your CV but most of all it gives you a great set of friends and allows you to meet so many like-minded people. I've been on committee for 3 years now and I have throughly enjoyed it, and gained many crucial life skills from it; the most important ones being time management and how to get the most out of people.

That said, don't underestimate your responsibilities as many have done in the past! The next lot will be running one of the largest, most active societies with a huge past full off achievements so you've got a lot on your shoulders.

Good luck :thumright:

Ha! MILF-Hunter, you make yourself sound like such a martyr! Might as well have added in some violins
