Hebrides Challenge

29 June - 4 July 2008 700km adventure race over a week for teams of 2, 4, or 5

The Hebridean Challenge is a relay race using only human power to negotiate a course of up to 700 km in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. It is not just an event for super-fit athletes (though we normally have a few in the race) but is aimed at people who consider themselves to be fit, and competent at navigating in the outdoors. As one recent competitor put it, "the best qualification for this event is a love of wild places."

In order to add another dimension to the race (and more fun!) teams also face some logistical challenges. Firstly, some sections take place in parallel, so different team members might be involved in legs that overlap. This might mean for example that at a given checkpoint an incoming runner tags both a biker and a kayaker and the two routes diverge for a while, maybe with other tags taking place before they converge again. Secondly, teams need to collect points during the week, or face a time penalty for any deficit. They do this by sending multiple team members on some sections, which they choose.

Hebridean challenge looks great fun, but at £200 per person for a 5 person team it might be a bit much for me. It would be a bloody good laugh though!

From the Itchen Park Adventure race website...

At the end of the final run teams will enter the now famed 'Dirty Double Arena' where highly trained Gorillas will wrestle and impede the team's progress
