I think it's about time I stopped throwing money away hiring a harness twice a week, but I don't really know anything about them and what's good and what's not.

I'm looking to spend about £50 but there seems to be loads around that price, any advice would be great!

Depends what you want it for.

Comfort and fit are usually the most important things to consider. Make sure you try lots on in a shop and test the harness taking your weight.

Other things to consider are what you are mostly going to be climbing in it.

If you're climbing trad you want lots of gear loops.

If you're going to do lots of climbing in the alps you may want one where the leg loops unclip so you can put it on easily wearing crampons.

At the end of the day though for £50 you can't go far wrong if you get one that's comfy and well fitting.

Rock On at Redpoint are the best people to talk to about buying any gear. Harnesses are all siimilar with very subtle differences. As your planning to spend £50 on a harness any one you buy will come with all the features your going to need - gear loops, padding etc.

The best bit of advice that i can give you is to go and try some on, and see how they feel. Most shops have some method for you to "sit" in the harness to see if its comfortable, it wont take long for you to work out which ones are crap.

I don't think that any you'll end up trying on are actually plain crap, it's more to do with the shape of the harness and the shape of you. Like everyone's said, if you buy one from somewhere decent they'll let you spend as long as you want hanging in different harnesses to see what suits you.

Oh if only you were a girl!! How am i ever to get rid of this new harness that's too big!? ay ay ayy!

Rayzk... I don't know what waist size you are... but if it is smaller than the 'smalls' the women's harnesses are a good option, plus I think you get a bit more padding.

A skinny bugger at wolf mountain has a women's harness; however nobody really mocks the bloke since he also climbs 7b/c ... damn him and his power-weight ratio.

i'd go for what ever is on offer in a woman's harness in your size! (as long as it has some gear loops it's all good)

I got an Edelrid Jay in small after trying a couple of others on, just under £50 with my club discount. I've only ever used hired harnesses before and it was so comfy compared to them, especially the descent which used to be pretty painful!
