Why does it have to save automatically??

WinShell just had a hissy fit and wiped one of my files. Luckily I write different chapters in different files, so only lost one chapter of ten pages, not all 58 pages.

this is why a three year course is sooo much better then!!

LaTeX is amazing. I love it. LaTeX doesn't save automatically, it's just a typesetting language. Your editor saves automatically, and that's an option than can be disabled. (I actually use TexnicCentre which I prefer as an editor). And backup your dissertation or else it's doomed to be wiped 2 days before the deadline and that'd be bad.

But that doesn't sound extremely shitty, so you do have my sympathy.

OK yes, latex fine, winshell not. But winshell is the only option in the computer lab upstairs. texnic centre is also my favourite, but I don't get to decide what is on he computers!
If you know how to stop WinShell from saving whenever you load it up to a dvi, let me know!!

Oh, it has to save then I'm afraid. Very odd that it wiped it as it saved it. When you convert it to DVI you're running the LaTeX program itself, and that processes the saved file on your hard drive so it has to be saved to able to LaTeX the most recent version.

This is like a maths only language.

Thats a bit pants tho Sazzle. Maybe the chapter will be even better when you re-write it (always look on the brightside and all that)

It'd render as Starley's brain tends to the empty brain as the amount of beer he's drunk tends to infinity. Which isn't that controversial, whether applied to you or any other stoat. :p

Try Lyx, it's an amazing graphical front to latex. Saved me many minutes on my project.
