2 and 3 man versions

I second Vango as fairly good tent make. Sort of midrange in terms of quality, which is what i guess you are looking for. I have a Vango Omego 3 man tent - it's lasted 4 years really easily, still looks pretty new. Don't think they make it anymore and it does weigh just over 3Kg so more for car camping.
However, you could get something a bit smaller - there is the Alpha and Beta I believe, Vango are also recommended for D of E.

I personally would avoid some of the cheaper makes like Outwell, Gelert, Hi Gear, Eurohike if they are still about.
Also I doubt you would need a higher end tent in this country unless your going for a very lightweight tent or pitching it in Scotland in the winter.

Guess just check out Rock Bottom or GoOutdoors (there is a store in Birmingham at Erdington) etc

As for stoves - I have a jetboil as i got it free but haven't used it yet, will let you know how it is whenever I do.

We're not wayfarers so way would we be 'trekking' with a tent? furthest it would be carried is a few meters from the car. Cheap and cheerful is the way forward, I got my 3 man tent for £20 from go outdoors, has lasted 2 years so far and it hasn't leaked/ fallen down on me. bargain!

True, not Wayfayrers. But we are Mountaineers and mountaineers shag mountains too so may need to carry a tent. But then you gotta think what you use it for. But I'd get one you can carry

Thats what bivy bags and snow holes are for. Anyway most of us don't go to crags more than 20 minutes from the road.

Not sure how comfy a bivvy bag would be for a long period of time but anyway, I've just seen this on UKC Louise. About 3kg so should be fine to carry between 2 and not too expensive.
