The award is aimed at those who wish to supervise groups on single pitch crags and climbing walls. We run the course, subsidised by the Guild, to give our members professional training for a safer and more enjoyable experience! The training covers choice of venue, rope work (top, bottom and abseiling), correct use of equipment, group management, emergency procedures, crag etiquette, access and conservation. There is loads more info and a syllabus on the MLT site.

When: 4-5 October 2008 (1st weekend of term)

Where: The Roaches, Peak District (near Leek)

Who:Any keen climber with at least 15 trad routes interested in improving their skills and knowledge with a view to taking groups single pitch climbing.

Cost: £60 each for the course fee + transport and accommodation if necessary.

There are 7 places available so sign up now! Please post your name clearly and if you can provide transport. Full payment will be needed to confirm the place.

I have done this and found it really worthwhile; even if you don't intend to take it further and 'teach' or do the actual award. You will learn a load of stuff that can help with your climbing.

Tommy - I am not signing up again, just to be clear!

Yes Tommy, sounds good. You can never know too much where safety is concerned.

Not right there Tommy, they don't even have to be leading Severe at this stage, they just need to have led 15 routes on traditional leader placed protection.

The 15 routes is only a guideline to make sure that candidates have had experience of placing runners and leading, as there is very little time to cover those skills in depth during a training course. And lets face it the placing runners is pretty key to the rest of the course! If you are a couple of routes short that is not a huge problem, it just means that will have more to do, if decide to progress to assessment.
