Hi I will be starting at Birmingham uni in the autumn and this society looks perfect but unfortunately due to a spectacularly bad bouldering injury I won't be climbing till at least December so was wondering if there is anything I can do to get involved and meet people until then?

cheers
Ali

Ali, thanks for getting in touch!
i should let one of the committee give a more detailed answer but essentially yes.
the club organise loads of climbing and social events every fortnight through out the year and especially in freshers week. your first stop should be the stall during the societies fair from there you can find out how to join and when the fresher socials will be. the first climbing / social is to Stanage, its in mid October.

i wise stoat once told me the best way to recover from an injury is to shag....

hey. I don't know if i can give any more information as tommy seems to have covered all the bases. Definately come and find us at either the sports or societies fair, we'll have a stall and probably be all geared up. We have great socials, especially at the start of the term to get involved in. I myself had an injury after christmas but could still get stuck into the social side, and you can meet people for when you do get back to full health :)

Ali! You're probably the most popular person in this forum right now, in that you've had 3 replies in no time at all!

Being one of the social secs this year, my answer would be YES! You can definitely get involved without doing any climbing at all! We'll be having a freshers climbing session in your first week of term (you'll get more info on this when you come and see us at the fair :) ) THEN...we'll be having a social where you will get to meet all of the committee and other 'newbies', as well as all of the other lovely beings in the club! This is always a good laugh and informal!
THEN...Stanage is the first trip of the year and is just as much a social gathering as it is a climbing trip! So DEFINITELY come along to this!
On top of all of this, we have a social EVERY 2 WEEKS...and we've got some pretty cool things lined up for you guys this year!

So all in all, yes there is LOADS you can get involved in even if you can't shag at the moment! So come and see us at the societies fair and/or the sports fair in your freshers week and we'll get you signed up and sorted out!

Look forward to meeting you :D

Lawrence

thanks for the warm welcome guys :D good to see there are so many social events going on will definitely try and get involved, I just finished at Sheffield uni so a chance to get back up to the peaks would be fantastic even if I might explode with envy at you healthy types.

oh and currently stairs are still a challenge so the stoats advice may have to wait sadly....

still not quite sure how I did it but way back in December I fell off a bouldering wall in Sheffield, heard a loud crack, looked down and noticed my leg was pointing in the wrong direction.... torn ACL and MCL. Had reconstruction surgery recently so just waiting for it to strengthen up now.
Frankly I'd recommend trying to avoid doing the same thing.

Been there mate, you'll be back in no time I'm sure :D and there is no greater place than with the stoats up in brum. Especially first term so get involved as much as you can. you can find us on here, although the website needs updating, and we also have a group and a fan page on facebook so you can keep informed on either :D
