Hey,
It also depends on what airport your travelling from, not the airline company you've booked with. The simple rule they told me when I rang up Manchester is that no sharp metallic objects are allowed in your hand-carry, or anything that could be used as a weapon... carabiners are not allowed due them being used as knuckle dusters, slings are not allowed as you could tie people up with them.
However, my only experience with gear was at Manchester this June when I took the 60m club rope in hand carry, they pulled me over but were not sure if it was allowed so then they actually got out a book to check, it had funny little pictures of what is and is not allowed in hand carry; there was a big red cross against the small plastic ties, pieces of cord, however a nice green tick next to a picture of a climbing rope

However, like i said, it depends on the airport, travelling back from Geneva, my mate had to put his rope in the hold as they took it off him when he went through security with it in hand carry.
In answer to your question, I know of a bloke who had to have a bit of an argument with some guys at either Geneva or an airport in Italy to ensure that they didn't take his penises off him. Other's I know have gone through without a hitch.
I'd shove them in your hold luggage, not worth the risk. Just cheat the scales

You can make your hold baggage lighter at check-in buy either using your toe to lift the scales or resting your bag against the side of the scales so the friction against the sides takes off several Kg... I did the latter to knock off about 5kg at manchester, and I used my toe to knock off 8kg at Geneva!

... I plan on slowly compiling a little database of what things you must do at what airport to fool the scales.
