As far as I am concerned it was never a concrete "driving is cheaper than flying" as flight prices are so variable - and can be dirt cheap.
When driving you may have to pay for a lot of stuff, which all adds up-such as:
- Ferry crossings both ways - Fuel for vehicle (more expensive now than a few years ago) - Car Insurance for more than one driver (you would want to share driving!) - Car Insurance that is valid in Europe (not all is) - European AA/RAC cover (advisable as if you have a problem, repairs can be very expense in Europe) - GB sticker, spare lights, reflective jacket etc (legally required in France - definitely want a GB sticker) - Food on the journey (its a long journey and you need to eat!) - More expensive camping (Mad Bernad, and other places I have stayed, all charge you extra for a car) - European / French road atlas (so you know where you are going) - Likely more that I have forgotten
You also need a suitable car!
The £-€ exchange rate is not very favourable now either. You would be buying most of your fuel in Euros, whereas you would buy your flights in pounds.
I don't want to put people off driving, it can be great fun and more flexible, but it is not necessarily a cheaper or easier option.
