Is redoing the board of trustees actually nessersary

no its not. as much as i can get out of the vote yes people is that they think by bringing in people from outside the decisions over money will be made by more 'qualified people'. I actually find this quite patronising, as if the students of the university are not the best qualified to make decisions on the university which they are attending/have attended then who is? if the student union is no longer run by students then it is technically no longer a union

On other hand, they might decide that spending Guild money on stupid campaigns like boycotting the National Bloody Service is a stupid thing to do. And did anyone else really care about the bin day being on a Monday? Was it really the terrible crime the Guild seemed to think it was?

Further investigation....

The new way the board of trustees will work:

4 Sabatical Trustees, as elected by campus ballot

4 Student Trustees, as elected by Guild Council

3 Lay Trustees, as elected by the appointments panel (whoever they are)

3 University Alumni Trustees, as elected by the appointments panel (ditto)

1 University Trustee such as the Registrar and Secretary, ex officio, appointed by the University.

So student and sabatical officers are still the majority, and the Alumni trustees used to be students here so it's not all bad.

However, for everyone but the university trustee, the maximum term is 2 years, so it's not likely to bring any sort of consistancy in mangement that you'd hope for, it'll still be changing hands every year or two and being a general mess, just will less power from actual students.

The appointments panel is:

"the panel set up in accordance with the Bye-Laws that will include the President, the Chair, two representatives of the University of Birmingham, Vice-President Democracy and Resources, two members of the Guild Council, two members of the Executive Committee who are not Trustees and one postgraduate Student. The Chief Executive shall be an observer;"
