You'd use Normal (outdoor) trousers as part of a layering system, so if it was cold you'd wear them plus over trousers and thermal bottoms, if it's warm you'd wear them on there own.

One thing with ski trousers is they do tend to be quite baggy (because that's cool) which means it's easy to snag them with your crampons. Having said that i did just buy a pair from TK Max! They've got a clearence on some of the ski trousers at the mo so it's even cheaper than usual!! Most of it doesn't seem too appropriate, too thick and way to baggy but there's the odd bit of patagonia and marmot stuff which seems like it'd be pretty good for winter climbing in, as it's waterproof and not too insulated. Plus they have lots of venting zips so you can stop yourself getting too hot on the walk in (sorry if you see my pants).

i'd recomend a layering system too rather than 1 thick pair of ski pants.
1. thick tights form primark (yes the girls section)
2. normal cheep walking trousers (u would get away with combats if u always wore overtrousers)
3. crapy waterproof overs - u prob will rip them

salopettes used for winter climbing tent to be a different style; a hard single/double shell (like ur jacket but for legs!)

annie fanny...5/6 boots i may well have (an older pair of my dads!) shall i ask?

Thanks for the advice :) I have normal outdoor trousers anyway so that's all fine, saves me making myself even poorer.
